# Smart Life Failed to Add Device During Pairing

## Smart Life Failed to Add Device During Pairing

If Smart Life or Tuya Smart displays **“Failed to Add Device”** while pairing a Bituo Technik smart energy meters- such as SPM01 and SPM02, first confirm that you have the correct product version, electrical system, and connection method.

### Important: SPM01/02 Voltage Compatibility

* **SPM01** is designed for **220–240 VAC single-phase systems**.
* **SPM02** is designed for **220–240 VAC (L–N)** or **380–415 VAC (L–L) three-phase systems**.

**SPM01 and SPM02 are not designed, rated, or supported for 120 VAC systems**, including 120/240 VAC split-phase installations.

A device powering on or appearing in an app does not confirm that it is suitable or supported for a 120 V system. Always use a meter rated for the installation voltage and wiring configuration.

### 1. Confirm the Communication Version

Bituo meters are available with different communication options. Make sure you are using the correct setup method for your device.

| Version    | Connection method                                                                                           |
| ---------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Wi-Fi** | Add the device in Smart Life or Tuya Smart using a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network. |
| **Zigbee** | Add the device through a compatible Tuya Zigbee gateway. It does not connect directly to your Wi-Fi router. |

### 2. For Wi-Fi Models: Check the 2.4 GHz Network

Most Tuya Wi-Fi devices support **2.4 GHz Wi-Fi only**. They cannot join a 5 GHz-only network.

If Smart Life fails to add the device:

* Connect your phone to a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network.
* If your router combines 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz under one network name, temporarily separate the bands or disable band steering during setup.
* Move closer to the router or access point.
* Use a visible Wi-Fi network with WPA2-Personal or WPA2/WPA3 mixed security where possible.
* Avoid enterprise Wi-Fi, captive portals, hidden SSIDs, client isolation, and WPA3-only networks during pairing.

{% hint style="info" %}
These Wi-Fi checks apply only to Wi-Fi versions. Zigbee, BLE, and Modbus RTU / RS485 versions use different connection methods.
{% endhint %}

### 3. Reset the Meter and Check App Permissions

Reset the device according to its product manual before pairing. Switching the power off and on does not always place the device in pairing mode.

Also check that Smart Life or Tuya Smart is updated and has the permissions it requests, including:

* Bluetooth
* Nearby Devices
* Location
* Local Network

If the app is not finding the device, temporarily disable VPN or private DNS services that may interfere with local network setup.

### 4. Check Signal Strength at the Installation Location

SPM meters are often installed inside electrical distribution boards. Metal enclosures, concrete walls, and dense wiring can weaken Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Zigbee signals.

Try the following:

* Open the electrical panel door during pairing.
* Move the router, access point, or temporary hotspot closer to the panel.
* Complete setup before closing the enclosure.
* Check wireless coverage at the final installation location.

### 5. Try AP Mode Only If It Is Supported

AP Mode, also called Compatibility Mode, is a fallback method for some Tuya Wi-Fi devices. It is not the default pairing method for every device.

Try AP Mode only if it is listed in the product manual or shown in Smart Life / Tuya Smart for your selected device category. Follow the device-specific reset and indicator instructions.

### Still Cannot Add the Device?

Restart your phone, router, and meter, then reset the meter and try again near the router.

When contacting Bituo technical support, please provide:

* Product model and communication version
* Installation voltage and wiring configuration
* Smart Life or Tuya Smart app version
* Phone model and operating system
* Router or gateway model
* Screenshot of the error message
* The setup step where pairing fails
