# How Data Export and Historical Storage Work for SPM/SDM Sensors

{% hint style="info" %}
**Applies to:** SPM/SDM | **Updated:** 2026-08-24
{% endhint %}

**Product Design Principle** SPM and SDM series devices are engineered as **high-precision, real-time energy sensing units (Sensors)** rather than standalone Data Loggers or billing meters.

In modern IoT and energy architectures, edge gateways (running smart home OS such as Home Assistant and Homey or industrial energy management systems like Siemens Sentron Powercenter 3000) and cloud servers handle large-scale data storage far more efficiently. Therefore, The Bituo Technik real-time energy sensors store cumulative total energy locally, while high-frequency historical interval data is logged and managed by your upstream gateway or cloud platform.\

Depending on your device version and integration architecture, you can export historical data through the following channels:

***

#### 1. Tuya Wi-Fi Version

The data export capability for Tuya Wi-Fi models depends on the module firmware version integrated into your device:

* **Tuya Wi-Fi "Davidia" Firmware Version (Manufactured from April 2026 onwards):**
  * **One-Click Email Delivery:** Features a brand-new, built-in Data Export page in the Smart Life / Tuya Smart App. You can export historical bi-directional energy consumption and generation data directly to your email in CSV/spreadsheet format.
  * **Per-Phase Data Export (3-Phase Models):** For 3-phase meters (e.g., SPM02, SDM02), historical data can be exported and emailed for each individual phase independently, facilitating precise load balancing analysis.
* **Basic SoC Firmware Version (Legacy):**

  * Data is rendered on the 6 default in-app charts (hourly, daily, monthly for forward/reverse energy). Direct CSV export via the mobile app is unavailable. Users requiring raw historical data are advised to utilize the paid Tuya Cloud API or transition to our Standard Zigbee/Wi-Fi versions for local gateway integration.

#### 2. Tuya Zigbee Version

The Tuya Zigbee models used in SPM/SDM Manufactured from July 2026 onwards are also equipped with the **Davidia firmware**, providing upgraded cloud data reporting and export capabilities when paired with Tuya infrastructure:

* **Recommended Approach (Tuya Zigbee Gateway + App Export):** We strongly recommend connecting Tuya Zigbee devices to an official Tuya Zigbee Gateway. Powered by the Davidia firmware, the Tuya Cloud supports full bi-directional energy data export and per-phase historical logging via the Smart Life App directly to your email.

{% hint style="warning" %}
**Important Note on Z2M (Zigbee2MQTT)** While integration via Z2M is technically possible, **we do not recommend using Tuya Zigbee versions with Z2M for heavy data logging**. Multi-phase meters (e.g., SPM02) transmit a high volume of Data Points (DPs). Due to the lack of native data-packet aggregation in the Tuya Zigbee protocol, frequent polling via Z2M can clog the local Zigbee mesh network and cause packet drops. For dedicated Z2M or local smart home hubs, please select our **Standard Zigbee 3.0 (-U0X)** versions.
{% endhint %}

#### 3. Standard Zigbee 3.0 Version (Ordering Code: `-U0X`)

Standard Zigbee 3.0 models are optimized as pure, high-speed sensing nodes for open-ecosystem integration.

* **Edge Gateway Historical Storage:** The sensor continuously pushes real-time electrical parameters to standard Zigbee coordinators (e.g., Home Assistant, Zigbee2MQTT, or open-standard edge gateways).
* **Data Export:** All historical data persistence is managed at the gateway level. For example, in Home Assistant, you can view long-term trend lines in the **History / Energy Dashboard** and export raw logs as CSV files with a single click.

***

#### 4. Standard Wi-Fi Version

Standard Wi-Fi variants feature built-in open API endpoints, including **MQTT, UDP, HTTP, and Modbus TCP**.

* **Local & Cloud Push:** You can configure your target MQTT Broker or API server directly through the device’s Embedded Web Page. The sensor streams real-time telemetry to your local gateway or cloud server.
* **Flexible Storage & Export:** The receiving gateway or server handles database logging (e.g., InfluxDB, Grafana), allowing unrestricted historical data retrieval, custom interval reporting, and CSV/Excel exports.

***

#### 5. Modbus RTU (RS485) Version

* **Industrial System Integration:** As RS485/Modbus RTU sensors, these models continuously serve real-time register data upon request.
* **Data Logging & Export:** Connect the sensor to an industrial Edge Gateway, DTU, PLC, or SCADA system. Data export is performed via the host software (e.g., Modbus Poll logging) or the central EMS platform.
